Context And Research

Walking Simulator Review(Virginia)

What effects does the game experience have on you? What does it make you feel or think about?

In the first 20 mins of gameplay the player is immersed into the world they make you feel nervous waiting in the line to go onto stage. We get a good bit of incite into her backstory

(Virginia: Secrets of Visual Game Storytelling, 2022)

((Virginia: Secrets of Visual Game Storytelling, 2022)

Which techniques are used by the developers? In this case, think about any narrative and any imagery used.

There is no talking in the game so everyone seems to use a lot of hand gestures to communicate and make up for not being able to actually speak. They make you wait a bit longer in the que which makes you think that something might be wrong this really builds tension early on and helps to immerse

Are there any aspects about the context that need to be considered? This could include who created the game, where it was created, when and under what circumstances, as well as your relationship with its context.

The Game was realised in 2016 by 505 Games the team consisted of only 10 people which is quite small for a games dev team and all of them were working remotely They took a lot of inspiration in the ways emotions are expressed from Thirty flights of loving

Ask yourself about the meaning of the walking simulator – what you think the game is about, and whether it might be trying to convey any messages.

The Games Graphics are cartoony and childish but i believe that is trying to hide the darker themes of the game and as you play/progress you start to discover what these other themes are

Brainstorm

This is my initial brainstorm of some themes and location for the final project I will go into more detail with the highlighted categories

Idea 1

Theme: Military some sort of conflict that has happened and you might be in the midst of it or there after it happened.

Idea 2

Cop/Detective some sort of mystery that the player has to solve or a sort of passive storytelling.

Idea 3

Some sort of dark fantasy world with emphasis on dark, gory and lonely dark souls like design/theme

Location: Oilrig an interesting environment to navigate with a lot of pipes and tools around

Middle eastern building lots of sand dust carpet

underwater labs test tube microscope wires and O2 tanks

Military FOB ammunition casings on the floor camo clothes crates dust gun racks

Intended audience

People who enjoy military games and puzzle games will enjoy it. There will be a mystery to solve through the game. People will be able to view my work on my website blog and on kickstarter later on. The game will likely be 17+ because of its themes and darker tone

Concepts of building floor plan And general progress

This room is the resting area for

the sniper team you can see the sleeping beds and a table where a card game was going on

Better view of rooms very basic sandy/dusty unclean not meant to be kept very well you can see there isn't matching chairs the carpets aren't centred everything is very ragtag

These are my first concept art floor designs for my idea you can see how its a ragtag building which used to be occupied by an Arabian family but is now home to a Marine sniper team who are constantly on watch this was created in FloorPlaner.com a website used by architects to make house/building designs

Idea Inspiration

These are two videos which inspired my games location and some ideas/themes that went into it. The clips are from a game which is currently in development by Golem studio Highwire called six days in Fallujah. The game is closely being guided help from former American army/marine service men  who took part in operation Phantom Fury.

In the game you play as a squad member in a marine fireteam. I wanted to do something similar with my game so the basis is that you are in a marine recon/sniper team I also copied the area/terrain however my world is a lot more open whereas Fallujah is very compact with buildings on buildings but both set in the desert somewhere middle-Eastern maybe most likely Iraq or Afghanistan I know I wouldn't be able to make a whole fps shooter game in the time I had so I chose the style I wanted but used a different genre.

Decals

In The games industry devs use decals very often to add extra detail to surfaces such as blood splatters bullet holes dirt/muck on walls. Decals can be placed on all surfaces and assets to give it that extra bit of detail. Game devs have been using decals since the start of gaming one of the first being the original doom. In my game I Imported some different decals Which I would place all around the two rooms some of them being different dirt patterns and a blood splatter on a wall. Decals are really good at giving an empty environment character.

3DS MAX

3ds Max is widely used throughout the game dev community it is a piece of software used to create 3D animations, models, games and images

Some Pros and Cons of using 3DS max

-3DS max can get unstable when trying to do complex renders.

-3DS max has a lot of small tools which can be used to tweak details and get the job done faster

-3DS max is not to beginner friendly you will struggle to operate the software with no professional guidance or prior knowledge of 3D modelling softwares

overall 3DS max is a very good software to learn as there is a good combination of tasks that you can complete using the program
